UFC 306 PPV is the second Noche UFC event to take place during Mexican Independence Day weekend. The event is set to take place on September 14, 2024, at The Sphere in Las Vegas, NV. The main event bout is UFC Bantamweight Championship bout between Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvilli. The event will start at 7:30 PM ET with prelims card to be followed by the main card at 10 PM ET on ESPN+ PPV in United States. UFC Fight Pass will carry the event worldwide.
Dana White and the UFC will celebrate Mexican Independence Day at UFC 306 in Las Vegas. It is an event partnered with Riyadh Season for the ultimate fan experience. The main event will see Sean O’Malley defend the UFC bantamweight title against Merab Dvalishvili. The co-main event will be a trilogy fight between Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko for the UFC flyweight belt.
UFC President Dana White announced his intentions late in 2023 that the promotion was looking to hold an event at The Sphere in Las Vegas, NV, which opened in September 2023. UFC then announced UFC 306 event will be the second Noche UFC event to take place during Mexican Independence Day weekend and would take place at The Sphere. It would be the first sporting event to take place at the venue. On July 26, 2024, Dana White announced via social media that bantamweight title fight between Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvilli would headline the event. He also announced that the trilogy women’s flyweight title fight between Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko would be the co-main event. Brian Ortega and Diego Lopes were booked to fight at UFC 303 PPV main card. Due to medical issues, Ortega had to pull out on the evening of the fight. Dan Ige stepped in to face Lopes on just few hours notice. The bout between Ortega and Lopes was later rebooked for this event.
The first Dana White’s Contender Series alum to win and defend gold, O’Malley last fought in March, defending his title against Marlon Vera. “Suga” Sean is lethal with his hands, as he has twelve wins via knockout and holds the UFC record for the highest number of strikes landed per minute (7.67) in bantamweight history. He faces a 2019 World Championships silver medalist in Dvalishvili, a wrestler on a ten-fight win streak. The Georgian didn’t want to face friend and teammate Aljamain Sterling while he was champion, and beat the likes of Jose Aldo, Petr Yan, and Henry Cejudo in the interim.
Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko meet for a third time, with the women’s flyweight title once again hanging in the balance. Each of the first two meetings between these two standout talents has been tense and competitive, with Grasso pulling off the upset to claim the title in the first meeting last March before a debated scorecard resulted in the rematch at Noche UFC last September ending in a draw. Both champion and challenger had their moments in each of the first two encounters, with Shevchenko ahead going into the championship rounds in each contest before Grasso rallied, first for the finish and then to earn a draw. While they were exceptionally collaborative and focused on being quality coaches during their time on Season 32 of The Ultimate Fighter, it’s impossible for there not to be simmering tension between these two as the series to date has been riddled with questions and points of debate. This third meeting is an opportunity for both Grasso and Shevchenko to definitively stamp themselves as the dominant competitor and undisputed champion, with the future direction of the division tethered to the outcome. Should Grasso win, 2025 could be the first year since 2018 where Shevchenko is not involved in a title fight, while if “Bullet”emerges victorious, the series would be level at 1-1-1, with a fourth fight lingering as a possibility. But before getting to what happens after, we have to get through the fight itself, and just like the first two instalments, this one should be riveting, as well. Let’s Take look on complete lineup and event detail for UFC 306.
